Who's on Sports Radio 1370 ESPN Locally?
Eric Kaelin -
General Manager, host of "High School Game Night", "The
Saturday Sportsline" and the Auto-Owners High School Report"
Eric grew up in Champaign, Illinois, graduated from Southern
Illinois in 1988. His first job was at WDWS Radio in
Champaign, Illinois where he was a board operator, fill-in
host for the Lou Henson Show/ John Mackovic Show and worked part
time for TBC Sports and their college football/basketball
coverage. Eric also hosted "Illini Weekly" that aired
weekly on Sports Channel Chicago.
In 1993, Eric accepted a job offer to become the new
Executive Producer for WBNS-AM in Columbus, Ohio, where he spent
11 years hosting shows and covering Ohio State University
sports, the Columbus Clippers, Columbus Chill, Columbus Blue
Jackets (NHL) and the NCAA Tournament when it was held in
Columbus. He hosted with Kirk Herbstreit, Chris Speilman
and Jim Lachey. In 2004, Eric accepted a job offer to work
for 1530/1260 ESPN in Austin, Texas where he was the Program
Director before moving onto Memphis, Tennessee as the General
Manager of 730 ESPN Memphis and 1360 ESPN Little Rock. In
2007, Eric accepted the job as the new General Manger of WGHN in
Grand Haven for new owners, Will Tieman/ Wendy Hart.
Eric's likes - Long walks, puppy dogs, water color paintings and
shoveling snow. He is married with two boys and a dog.
He's basically a shy person that hates attention.
Matt Tjapkes
Matt's father (Doug) owned the station for about 15 years in the
70's early 80's. Matt has done play-by-play of the
Muskegon Lumberjacks and is currently the voice of Grand Haven
Ice Hockey, Grand Haven baseball, Muskegon Catholic Central
football and does a variety of other sporting events. Matt
along with his partner (Jeff Rose) just won an award from the
Michigan Association of Broadcasters for their 2011 hockey
broadcasts.
Floyd Fonte
Floyd has been Eric's co-host of "High School Game Night" for
basketball the past four years. Floyd starred as a running
back in the mid 70's for Grand Haven High School and has been a
probation officer for nearly 30 years in Ottawa County. If
Floyd is speaking to your kid, chances are he's in trouble.
Having grown-up in Grand Haven, Floyd knows just about everyone
and if you're in a hurry to get somewhere, just wave, don't stop
because it will be 10 minutes before you can move on.
Jim Harding
Jim played for Detroit Catholic Central's 1979 State
Championship winning football team and later played at
Northwestern. He turned down a scholarship to play at
Boston College to play for the Wildcats. The scholarship he
turned down went to Doug Flutie who went on to win the Heisman
Trophy at B.C. Jim is a basketball official and knows
every athlete in town. Jim likes to bird watch, collect
stamps and work on puzzles.
Jeff Rose
Jeff has been the board operator of our High School
Game Night / Game coverage for three years now and does a
fantastic job. He also does color commentary for Grand
Haven Ice Hockey/ baseball games on Sports Radio 1370 ESPN.
Despite the fact he roots for Michigan, Mr. Tieman allows him to
work at Sports Radio 1370 ESPN. Jeff responded by winning
award with play-by-play man Matt Tjapkes for their Grand Haven
Ice Hockey coverage.
Andy Wernette
Andy is in charge of video taping our sporting events and other
local events of note. Andy is a promising singer who
claims that people will be saying "Waylon Jennings Who?" when
Nashville calls. Andy is a diehard Michgan State fan and
basically can't stand Jeff.
Mike Secory
Mike is a former Grand Haven football and baseball
player who has coached more kids than anyone alive. Mike
has been with the station for 25 years and is our lead
play-by-play man for high school basketball coverage and does a
fantastic job calling the games.
